Like the first two editions of Sunshine/Noir, Sunshine/Noir III: Writing from San Diego and Tijuana presents the reader with a wide range of contemporary San Diego writers of fiction and nonfiction alike as well as poets, artists, and photographers. It explores San Diego and Tijuana's border culture; the city's multiple identities and lost history; the region's natural beauty and endangered ecologies; its role as a center of the culture of war; and San Diego and Tijuana writers' attempts to explore the meaning of place.

By using a multiethnic, multidisciplinary, pan-artistic approach, this anthology offers the reader a fresh look at a city yet to be explored in such a fashion. Sunshine/Noir III is not comprehensive, but rather stands only as a place marker in the continuing exploration of literary San Diego that leaves many borders yet to be crossed. This anthology includes acclaimed and award-winning poets and writers as well as emerging authors. While most of the authors and artists anthologized here are from San Diego and Tijuana, a few are not, though we welcome them as good hosts. Into the Bardo

Jim Miller's Into the Bardo reminds us that everything is "tentative and precious." After experiencing a harrowing summer of several near-death experiences, it was poetry that Miller summoned, to bear witness to what he learned on this journey. In these poems, readers navigate the sometimes-precarious waters between wakefulness and sleep, life and death, treading in the liminal spaces of uncertainty. In fact, it was the great Roman poets, Virgil and Ovid, who taught us, Somnus, the god of sleep, was indeed the brother of Death. It is in this nexus where we find Miller revisiting memories of family and friends, the marvels of travel, the percipience of the arts, and ultimately, his musings on the "interconnectedness of all," especially as he beckons us to confront the economic and health care disparities that so many still endure. Miller reexamines a life lived while all along urging us to "feel the multi-grained texture of life / as it flows on ceaselessly / past even death." Into the Bardo is full of wonder and wisdom.

Paradise and Other Lost Places
